🤔 Frequently Asked Questions
Membership
Q: Who can join the band?
A: Anyone with a passion for music! We welcome all musicians who want to be part of the Craven Community Concert Band. The only requirement is that you bring your own instrument (unless you play percussion—then we’ve got you covered!).
Ready to join? Sign up here, whether you're a returning member or new to the band!
Q: Is there a fee to participate?
A: Nope! There are no participation fees. The only costs you may encounter are if you’d like to purchase a band shirt or concert DVDs. Simple as that!
Rehearsals
Q: Where are rehearsals held?
A: Most rehearsals take place in the New Bern High School band room. For some concerts, we may meet at the Grover C. Fields Auditorium or the Gazebo at Union Point Park. Keep an eye on communications for specific locations.
Q: How long are rehearsals?
A: Rehearsals run from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We recommend arriving a bit early to grab your seat and warm up—sometimes the band room fills up quickly! If you're running late, please let a section member know so they can save you a chair.
Q: How do I know when rehearsal is about to start?
A: You’ll know it’s time to begin when the conductor steps up to the podium. That’s your cue!
Q: Anything else I should know about rehearsals?
A: We ask that all phones be turned off or set to vibrate and tucked away during rehearsal to keep distractions at a minimum. Also, if you can help with breaking down the room afterward, we’d greatly appreciate it! And one last thing, if the conductor is talking we ask that everyone else be quiet and listen.
Attendance
Q: How many rehearsals are there before a concert?
A: Typically, we meet approx. 6-10 times before each concert. To ensure the best performance for everyone, we strongly encourage you to attend most rehearsals, especially the last two before the concert.
Q: What if I can’t attend every rehearsal?
A: If you anticipate missing several rehearsals, we recommend waiting for the next concert cycle. We want to respect everyone’s time, so if attendance becomes an issue, the conductor may address it on a case-by-case basis.
Music
Q: What kind of music does the band play?
A: We play a variety of genres, including classical, Broadway, movie soundtracks, pop, and traditional wind band music—ranging from beginner to advanced levels. There’s always something for everyone!
Q: Can I take the music home?
A: Yes! You can check out music folders after rehearsal. Since folders are limited, please return them by the next meeting. If you can’t make it to rehearsal, you can drop off your folder at Fuller’s Music.
Q: What part do I play?
A: Section leaders assign parts at the start of each concert cycle. Be flexible with your part—we need strong players on all sections! If you have concerns, feel free to chat with your section leader or the director.
Q: There’s a solo! Who gets to play it?
A: Solos are often given to multiple musicians to ensure flexibility. The conductor will make the final decision as the concert approaches, considering the needs of the performance.
Q: Anything else I should know about the music?
A: Practice makes perfect! The more you practice, the better we sound together. 🎶
Concerts
Q: What should I wear for concerts?
A: We have two uniform styles depending on the venue:
For indoor concerts at Grover C. Fields: Band shirt or white polo, black pants, black shoes, and black socks.
For the May outdoor concert: Khaki pants or skirt with your band shirt or white polo.
Band shirts are available for purchase starting in September.
Q: Will there be music stands at the concert?
A: We borrow equipment from local schools, but if you can, please bring your own black music stand to help us stay organized.
Q: What if I can’t make it to a concert?
A: If you know in advance that you’ll miss a concert, please let your section leader and the director know as soon as possible. This allows us to adjust the parts and ensure the show goes smoothly.
Q: How can I help at concerts?
A: We always appreciate volunteers to help with transporting equipment, setting up, and breaking down after the show. Every little bit helps!
